What will I learn in a political science degree or training program?


The aim of a political science degree or training program is to teach you how the political system actually works. Not just in the sense that there a Congressmen and Senators, but to explain how the whole system interacts. As we know, sometimes it works well, sometimes badly, and political science degrees and training programs are attempting to teach you, at least as far as anybody knows, why this is so. One of the most fascinating parts of the subject is finding out why, even though everyone means well, it doesn't always work correctly, why we sometimes get the results we didn't want. Another way of looking at it is that political science tries to explain the way the world actually works, rather than the way we would like it to.

What will a political science degree or training program qualify me to do?


Knowing the theories and examples of political science, through a degree or training program, will help you understand why things are as they are, how the interactions of power make the world as it is. That's a great help to you in almost every part of life of course. But in terms of jobs the degree or training program will qualify you for perhaps the two most important are to be a political scientist (average salary, $86,000) who does further research into the subject, or a journalist ($ 31,000) who attempts to explain it all to other people who don't have that training.
